Katharine Bryan, retired WMU exec, dies

KNOXVILLE — Katharine Bryan, retired executive director, Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union, died Oct. 26 here.

Bryan, 78, served Tennessee WMU from 1985-1997. She also served on the staff as the first full-time paid field worker from 1957-59. Bryan considered Edgefield Baptist Church, Nashville, her home church.

Prior to returning to Tennessee WMU, Bryan was director of the adult resource center for Richland College, Dallas, Texas (1981-85); on the staff of the Southern Baptist Convention Missions Education Council (1977-80) and editor of Missions Digest, a monthly publication for pastors and other denominational workers.

From 1967-77 Bryan was director of age level organizations for Texas WMU. Prior to that (1961-65) Bryan was a program associate for Woman’s Missionary Union of the Southern Baptist Convention in Birmingham, Ala.

Bryan was a graduate of Carson-Newman University, Jefferson City, and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas, where she earned both the M.A. in religious education and Ed.D. in adult education degrees.

After retirement in Knoxville she was director of adult education at Carson-Newman (1997-2000) and interim director of North Carolina WMU from 2000-02.
