Opinion — Reflections
Maintaining Sanity In ‘The Twilight Zone’

“The Twilight Zone” was a classic American television show which aired from 1959-64. It was a science fiction thriller with bizarre story lines and plots.

While the TV show was definitely fiction, I think the title has become reality for our nation today.

Recent events just since the Thanksgiving holiday have led me to think we are indeed living in “The Twilight Zone.” Here are just three. There are no doubt countless other examples I could draw from.

In my blog post last week at (http://lonniewilkey.wordpress.com/2013/12/02/596/) I wrote about the craziness that occurred related to what is known in the retail world as “Black Friday.” There were reports of people being stabbed and shot in addition to actual fist fights over “bargains.” One of the saddest reports was that of a mother who spit on another woman’s child in a dispute over baby clothing.

In another “Twilight Zone” reality episode, a woman shot and killed another woman over a dispute about Alabama losing to rival Auburn in a football game. The woman shot the person during a party because she was not upset enough over Alabama’s heartbreaking loss in the last second of the game. I am as passionate about my team as anyone but that is going beyond too far. It’s criminal.

And, finally, my wife taped an episode of a reality television show that she knew I had to see to believe.

The television program is “Best Funeral Ever” on the TLC network.

The episode I watched goes beyond bizarre. One “funeral” had a casket pushed down a bowling alley so the deceased woman (an avid bowler) could have one final strike.

Oddly enough, that was the “normal” funeral during the episode. The other “funeral” was a “wedding” between two urns containing the remains of a couple who had been married before their deaths. Written words can’t do this justice. You just need to find a rerun and watch it for yourself.

The question for Christians is this: How do we maintain our sanity in the twilight zone of insanity in which we live?

Actually, it is not as hard as you might imagine. We maintain our sanity by keeping our focus on God.

Satan uses things and events to distract us. We must keep our eyes on God and go about our business of reaching a lost world for Jesus Christ.

As we move closer to Christmas and the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, don’t be distracted by Satan.

“The Twilight Zone” in which we live is a missions field which needs the gospel.
