WMU Scholarship Information

Tennessee WMU awards approximately 20 to 30 scholarships annually to Tennessee Baptist students in Tennessee colleges, Southern Baptist seminaries, and Kings Academy. Scholarships are granted to full-time students who are taking the equivalent of 12 credit hours per semester, who meet various qualifications, and are currently involved in missions and ministry. Scholarship funding is provided by gifts through the Golden Offering for Tennessee Missions and endowments.

Applications for the 2015-2016 academic year are available for download below. Applications are due to the Tennessee WMU office no later than January 10, 2015. EXCEPTION: Amanda Day CWJC and Creely Wilson CMJC scholarships are due December 10, 2014.

Undergraduate Scholarships

TENNESSEE WMU SCHOLARSHIPS:

Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union awards scholarships to women and men who maintain a 2.6 grade average out of 4.0 points or its equivalent for high school or college. Preference is given to those students who are current missions volunteers and/or those who are committed to full-time career missions service or those who have plans to work in WMU on a professional level.

MARY NORTHINGTON SCHOLARSHIPS:

Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union awards multiple undergraduate scholarships annually to Baptist students in Tennessee Baptist colleges ($1500.00) and King’s Academy ($800.00). The scholarships are named for Mary Northington, former Executive Secretary-Treasurer of Tennessee WMU.

MYRTLE CREASMAN SCHOLARSHIP:

Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union awards one (1) annual scholarship to an outstanding Tennessee Baptist female student who maintains an “A” average for high school or 3.5 GPA for college, who currently serves as a missions volunteer, and is pursuing a career in missions or a church-related vocation. The amount of the scholarship is determined from investment earnings from an endowment fund, named for Myrtle Creasman, former President of Tennessee WMU.

MYRTICE OWENS NURSING SCHOLARSHIP:

Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union awards one (1) scholarship of $1,000 to honor the missions legacy of Myrtice Owens, retired Tennessee missionary to Africa, to encourage Tennessee Baptist students to pursue a degree in nursing with the intent of serving on the mission field.

To apply for these scholarships, the applicant must:

  • Be a member of and active participant in a Tennessee Baptist church.
  • Be undergraduate attending a private or public college within Tennessee.*
  • Maintain minimum grade average of 2.6 out of 4.0 points** or its equivalent.
  • Show evidence of financial need.
  • Show evidence of current participation in Tennessee Baptist missions programs, Baptist Collegiate
  • Ministries, Tennessee Baptist missions/ministry.
  • Provide references.
  • Must be attending school full time or taking the equivalent of 12 credit hours per semester.

Specific Qualifications for Myrtle Creasman and Myrtice Owens:

  • The Myrtice Owens Nursing Scholarship recipient must be applying to an accredited nursing school in Tennessee with the intent of a career in nursing on the international mission field.
  • *Applicants qualifying for the Myrtle Creasman scholarship may attend school outside of Tennessee.
  • **GPA Requirements for Myrtice Owens and Myrtle Creasman scholarships differ:
    - Myrtice Owens applications must have at least a GPA of 3.0 out of possible 4.0.
    - Myrtle Creasman applications must have at least a GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0 points.

BETTYE MOSS POWERS SCHOLARSHIP

The Bettye Moss Powers scholarship is an endowed scholarship at the WMU Foundation. Annual scholarship will be awarded to a full-time upper class undergraduate Tennessee Baptist student who has a definite interest in career missions.

To apply for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a full time upper class undergraduate student. Males will be considered if no females apply.
  • Be active in a Tennessee Baptist church
  • Be pursuing an education in preparation for career missions
  • In keeping with the purpose, applicant must show evidence of current participation in Tennessee Baptist missions programs, Baptist Collegiate Ministries, Tennessee Baptist missions / ministry.

ACTEENS SCHOLARSHIP:

Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union awards one (1) scholarship ($2500.00) annually to one (1) outstanding high school female senior who is entering her freshman year as a full time student in college and who has demonstrated active involvement in the Acteens organization.

Qualifications:

  • Be a member of and active participant in a Tennessee Baptist church.
  • Maintain minimum grade average of 2.6 out of 4.0 points or its equivalent.
  • Show evidence of current participation in Tennessee Baptist missions/ministry programs.
  • Provide references.
  • Demonstrate active involvement in Acteens in at least two (2) of the following ways:
  • Completion of at least two (2) levels of the Acteens individual achievement plan; or active participation in local ministry for at least two (2) years; or selection as a State or National Acteens Advisory Panelist or National Top Teen; or serve for two (2) summers as an Acteens Activator.

NOTE: All applicants applying for the Acteens Scholarship will also be included as applicants for the Tennessee WMU Scholarship. Completing a separate application for the Tennessee WMU Scholarship is NOT necessary.

Graduate Scholarships

KATHARINE C. BRYAN GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP:

Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union awards at least one (1) scholarship annually from endowed funds to a female entering, returning, or attending graduate school. She must be a member of a Tennessee Baptist church or have Tennessee Baptist ties. To receive the scholarship, she must have a GPA of 2.6 on her last transcript and to reapply must maintain a 3.5. The amount of the scholarship is determined from the investment earnings. Financial need is not a factor in granting this scholarship, named for Katharine C. Bryan, former Executive Director-Treasurer of Tennessee WMU.

To apply for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a member of and active participant in a Southern Baptist church.
  • Have at least a 2.6 out of 4.0 points or its equivalent on last transcript.
  • Maintain minimum grade average of 3.5 out of 4.0 points or its equivalent to re-apply.
  • Show evidence of participation in Tennessee Baptist missions programs, Baptist Collegiate Ministries, Tennessee Baptist missions/ministry.
  • Provide references.
  • Be a returning female graduate student or a female applying to enter a graduate degree program.
  • Show evidence of Tennessee Baptist ties. (May attend graduate school outside TN)

SEMINARY SCHOLARSHIPS:

Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union annually awards a limited number of scholarships ($1000.00) to students who are career missions volunteers or who plan to work in Woman’s Missionary Union on a professional level. These scholarships are for graduate study in any Southern Baptist seminary or seminary extension program and will be awarded only to Tennessee Baptists.

To apply for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a member of and active participant in a Southern Baptist church.
  • Maintain minimum grade average of 2.6 out of 4.0 points or its equivalent.
  • Show evidence of financial need.
  • Show evidence of current participation in missions programs or Baptist Collegiate Ministries.
  • Be a full-time student.
  • Provide references.
  • Show evidence of Tennessee Baptist ties.

Special Scholarships

AMANDA DAY CWJC SCHOLARSHIP:

Tennessee Woman's Missionary Union awards three (3) scholarships to women who are participants and/or graduates of a Tennessee Christian Women's Job Corps program. The scholarship is named in honor of Amanda Day, former Tennessee WMU Ministry Specialist under whose leadership the ministry of CWJC began.

To apply for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a current participant or a graduate of a Tennessee Christian Women’s Job Corps site.
  • Apply to a community college, vocational school or other accredited educational institution.
  • Be or have been involved in mentoring and Bible Study at a TN CWJC site.
  • Show financial need and have earned a GED or high school diploma.
  • Applicant may re-apply annually.

CREELY WILSON CMJC SCHOLARSHIP:

Tennessee Woman's Missionary Union awards three (3) scholarships to men who are participants and/or graduates of a Tennessee Christian Men's Job Corps program. The scholarship is named in honor of Creely Wilson, who served as the first volunteer CWJC statewide coordinator for Tennessee WMU.

To apply for this scholarship, the applicant must:

  • Be a current participant or a graduate of a Tennessee Christian Men’s Job Corps site.
  • Apply to a community college, vocational school or other accredited educational institution.
  • Be or have been involved in mentoring and Bible Study at the TN CMJC site.
  • Show financial need and have earned a GED or high school diploma.
  • Applicant may re-apply annually.

KINGS ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIPS:

Tennessee Woman’s Missionary Union awards annually to Baptist students enrolled at King’s Academy ($800.00). The scholarships are named for Mary Northington, former Executive Secretary-Treasurer of Tennessee WMU.

King’s Academy administrators recommend the scholarship recipient who:

  • Is a current student at King’s Academy in Seymour, TN.
  • Is a member of and active participant in a Tennessee Baptist church.
  • Maintains minimum grade average of 2.6 out of 4 points or its equivalent.
  • Shows evidence of financial need.
  • Is attending school full time.
