Literacy Missions Ministries

Thousands of people across Tennessee are struggling with reading, writing or conversational English.

  • Many are Americans who are semi-literate or even illiterate;
  • Many are American children who are strugging in school; and
  • Many are newcomers to our country who would like to speak our language. All would be grateful for a Christlike person to help them improve their skills.

Tennessee Literacy Missions Ministries involves Tennessee Baptist churches, associations, and others who desire to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with internationals who need to speak English, adults who need to improve their reading skills, and school-aged children and youth who need help with school work, through these ministries:

1. Adult Reading Writing (ARW) This ministry involves tutoring adults who are either illiterate, functioning non-readers, or those who are seeking to pass the "General Educational Development" (GED) test.

2. English as a Second Language (ESL) This ministry involves teaching foreign-born adults currently residing in Tennessee who want to learn conversational English.

3. Tutoring Children & Youth (TCY) This ministry involves tutoring children and/or youth needing help with their schoolwork to enable them to succeed at and remain in school until they graduate.

4. Teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) This ministry involves teaching conversational English during short-term mission trips abroad.
