SEVEN PREREQUISITES AT THE BOTTOM of this section!
This training is a refresher for those who are already DR Chaplains and will be the introductory course for those who would like to become one. Remember you must have taken Introduction to Disaster Relief - the basic course - in order to take this course. You must also have a letter of recommendation from your pastor.
You will need to have downloaded the "new" DR Chaplaincy Manual.
You are responsible for printing your own personal copy and for having READ THIS MANUAL before the training.
REMEMBER THERE ARE PREREQUISTES:
1. You have taken the Introduction to Disaster Relief in the last three years
2. You have downloaded and read the new introduction to DR Chaplaincy manual revised in 2007, Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Chaplain Training Manual
3. You have registered; pay your $25 at the door. (Plus credentialing fee, if applicable)
4. You are among the first 50 people who register.
5. You have a letter of recommendation from your pastor. MUST BE RECEIVED BEFORE THE TRAINING.

Training Class Descriptions: (A pre-requisite to all specialized classes is “Introduction to Disaster Relief”.)
Administration – 1.5 hour class. This class teaches you how to use your skills in the Command Post either onsite at a disaster or at the Tennessee Disaster Operations Center in Brentwood. Being able to handle multiple phone lines and computer skills are very important for use in Brentwood and onsite. If your gifts are computers, telephones, and/or organization, please give this class a try. The volunteer who takes this class needs to be detail-oriented. [In the near future, we will be including training on DREW (Disaster Relief Electronic Workspace) – our new Disaster Relief database.]
Bucket Truck Training must be certified in Chainsaw Operations prior to taking this course
Part A: 1.5 hour class. This training course is designed to provided classroom instruction in the safe and efficient operation of bucket trucks related to Disaster Relief work. (You must pass an exit test to become certified.)
Class provides:
• Pre-operation inspections procedures
• Safe operation procedures
• Proper and efficient use of chainsaws from bucket truck
Part B: Hands On 1.5 hour class. This class allows volunteers to operate the bucket truck and become comfortable with controls and operation of the equipment. This class requires volunteers to perform pre-trip/pre-use inspections on equipment.
Chain Saw Operation and Safety Training —1.5 hour class. This training covers the use and safety requirements for using a chainsaw during a disaster operation. It discusses the various activities during a disaster operation and including maintenance of the saw, suggestions for brush/limb pulling, and cutting techniques. Chainsaw team members need to take Rebuild Training so they are prepared to close holes in houses/roofs after trees have been removed.
Chaplain Training - 10 hours. This is the North American Mission Board training module for a chaplain in the Disaster Relief Program. This is only a part of the requirements to qualify as a Disaster Relief Chaplain in this program.
Childcare Training - This class teaches techniques in working with children who have become victims in a disaster. You will be prepared to move into a disaster area and work with limited resources. You will become comfortable working with babies, toddlers, and primary age children. You must have a background check to be certified in this course.
Communications Training - 6 hour class including hands on training. This module covers the use of radio equipment during the time of an emergency. It gives you hands on experience in setting up the antennas and running the different radios on the Command Trailer. Individuals taking this course should have an Amateur Radio License or be considering getting one.
Crew Chief Training - 1.5 hour class. This class is for those volunteers that will be leading church and association crews. It covers the paper work needed during an operation and responsibilities of the Crew Chief. We cover how an operation is set up and some of the problems that are in countered at the beginning of disasters.
Damage Assessment - 1.5 hour class. Damage assessment function is to provide decision-making information for a Disaster Relief operation of any size. Damage Assessment will gather, analyze, interpret, and distribute accurate and timely information about the extent of damage, overall impact, weather conditions and demographics of a disaster-affected community. Damage assessment will cover two areas: 1) community and 2) house-to-house. Team members go ahead of chainsaw and flood recovery teams to evaluate damage and inform follow-up teams on the scope of each job, including equipment that will be needed. If you are a contractor or have building skills, this conference is for you.
Disaster Relief Update – Approximately 1.5 hours of abbreviated update for Introduction to Disaster Relief whose initial training has expired or those who are nearing their expiration date.
First Aid, CPR and AED - Knowing how to respond to a first aid or CPR emergency is one of the most important skills a person can possess. This Standard First Aid, CPR and AED course meets the OSHA requirements and is your tool for training on the latest skills, techniques and expertise in life-saving procedures. The practice and feedback of using related skills in a realistic situation is integrated into the actual teaching experience.
Flood Recovery (Mudout) Training - 1.5 hour class. This class covers the techniques for drying out a house after it has been flooded or just wet from having the roof blown off during a storm. We discuss the possible contamination after many floods and the measures needed for decontamination and drying out the building and items in the building. Flood recovery units are prepared to remove flooring, carpet, and sheet rock to help dry out and sanitize the home after a flood.
Forklift Operation and Safety Training – 1.5 hour classroom time and 1.5 hour hands-on class. Critical Information will be given on various types of forklifts, pre-operation inspections, load handling, fueling and more.
Introduction to Disaster Relief Training – Approximately 3 hours. This is the introduction to Disaster Relief giving the history of the program, lists what the program does, organizations that we work with in this program, the equipment/units used in the program, and lists the characteristics of a volunteer. (THIS IS A PREREQUISITE TO ALL SPECIALIZED CLASSES.)
Maintenance Training – Approximately 11 hours including hands on training. This training covers the equipment on the large feeding unit and the required maintenance/service of this equipment. It will also cover the setup and teardown of the large tents.
Mass Feeding Training - 6 hours. This module covers the equipment and set up of a mass feeding unit/program. It is heavy on sanitation and health issues dealing with food preparation, various jobs in the operation, serving the food, and clean up.
Rebuild Training - 1.5-hour class. This training reviews the general construction problems we face during a disaster and the possible solutions. It emphasizes the safety aspect of disaster rebuild operations for work immediately after a storm and later long term rebuild activities. Rebuild units are prepared to replace floors, walls, roofs, etc.
Shower/Laundry Trailer Training – 1.5 hour class. This team gives aid to relief workers and other who are in need by providing showers and laundry support in the disaster area. The trailers have private shower stalls as well as washing machines, dryers, storage, and folding areas. Volunteers receive and assist those requesting their services, do laundry, sanitize showers, empty trash, replace needed supplies, and keep the trailer area neat. The class time covers the technical aspects of transporting, setting up and breaking down the unit. There is a detailed explanation of the process used to clean the laundry from the intake of clothes through the distribution of the clothes back to their owner. Included are job descriptions and materials used.
Site Security Unit (requires pre-approval before taking the class) - To provide for the safety of volunteer team members as they serve on disaster relief assignments and to safeguard the equipment and assets assigned to Disaster Relief by the Tennessee Baptist Convention.
- Training is restricted to current and retired law enforcement officers only who have been fully trained and POST certified. Security Specialists must meet the criteria set forth in 18 USC 926 B and 926C. Individuals interested as a Security Specialist or Security Assistant must request and complete an application form from David Acres. Pre-approval for training is required.
Spiritual Preparation/Evangelism – 3 hour class. This training covers spiritual preparation for the volunteer and also includes evangelism training for the volunteer to be able to use with Disaster Relief victims or in their daily walk.
Water Purification – Two-and-half-day class. This group provides clean water after a disaster has occurred. Portable water purification units are used to sanitize available water on location, making it safe for drinking, cooking, bathing, and other uses.
