It is that time of year again when ministry sites are looking for sojourners, summer missionaries, and innovators to serve for the summer. Below you will find information on what student missions are and the qualifications for each category.
STUDENT MISSIONS
Individuals who have completed at least their junior year of high school and have not been out of school more than six months at the time of application may serve as Student Missionaries. They serve from one month to two years and receive limited financial assistance and insurance from NAMB. This category includes various types of summer and semester missionaries. They receive administrative approval from the Missionary Mobilization Team.
SOJOURNERS
Sojourners are high school students who work with missionaries and churches in evangelism and church planting projects in the United States and Canada. Ministry settings vary from inner city to the beach. Sojourners serve with other student missionaries and/or career missionaries.
Basic Qualifications
- Candidates MUST have completed either their junior or senior year of high school when they begin serving.
- Candidates must have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
- Candidates serve 4-10 weeks during the summer.
- Candidates will receive travel, insurance and an honorarium ($50 per week of service—at the end of service) from NAMB.
- Room and board will be provided by the place of service
SUMMER MISSIONARIES
Summer missionaries assist local churches, campus ministries, and NAMB missionaries with evangelism and church planting. Their work concentrates on helping in community ministries, ministering to teenagers, working with campus ministries, or assisting in church planting.
Basic Qualifications
- Candidates MUST have completed their freshman year in college and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
- Candidates MUST be an active member of a Southern Baptist church to receive travel funds and honorarium.
- Candidates may serve from 4-10 weeks, May through August.
- Candidates will receive travel, insurance and an honorarium ($75 per week of service—at the end of service) from NAMB.
- Room and board provided by the place of service.
INNOVATORS
This pathway of service is designed for students who desire a hands-on experience of taking their Christian witness to the work place.
Innovators work at a secular job (usually 40 hours a week) while assisting local missionaries (8-10 hours a week) in evangelism and church planting. Supervision and mentoring provided by the place of service.
Basic Qualifications
- Innovators are self-funded college missionaries.
- Candidates must have completed their freshman year in college.
- Candidates must have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
- Term of service varies according to ministry setting.
- Candidates may be members of a non-Southern Baptist evangelical church.
SEMESTER MISSIONARIES
Semester missionaries assist local churches, campus ministries, and NAMB missionaries with evangelism and church planting. Their work concentrates on helping in community ministries, ministering to teenagers, working with campus ministries, or assisting in church planting.
Semester missionaries:
- Candidates must have completed their freshman year in college and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
- Semester missionaries serve from 1 to 5 semesters.
- Semester missionaries receive travel, insurance and monthly honorarium from NAMB.
- Room and board provided by the place of service.
- Candidates must be an active member of a Southern Baptist church to receive travel and honorarium.
- Candidates must not have been out of school more than six months at the time of application.
