Project Description

Western Heights Baptist Center in Knoxville’s inner city has been serving the surrounding community for eighty-nine years! The Center’s mission is to meet the physical and spiritual needs of all people by offering free food, clothing, household items, and by teaching God’s Word. Summer Missionaries’ service will be deeply tied to the social and cultural dynamics of Knoxville’s inner city, where poverty, homelessness, and generational struggles intersect with strong community bonds and resilience. The community values relationships, authenticity, and trust and is diverse, with African American, Latino, and immigrant populations contributing to the cultural fabric.

Summer Missionaries will engage in a blend of community outreach, ministry, and service projects designed to meet both spiritual and practical needs. They will specifically assist with an 8-week Summer Kids Club which serves 60-80 inner city kids. (Kids Club looks similar to VBS except with an added educational component). Other responsibilities will include community outreach (block parties, Bible clubs), homeless and poverty relief (serving meals and clothing), service projects (painting, cleaning, neighborhood beautification), and working alongside local church partners.

The experience for Summer Missionaries will be both challenging and transformative; they’ll be immersed in a culture that may differ from their own, learning to serve with humility and respect. Daily life will often involve the following: building relationships through consistent presence, listening to community stories (esp. w/kids and youth), adapting ministry approaches to fit the context, and growing spiritually through service, prayer, and reliance on God.
